The scene in A Cinderella Story where Chad Michael Murray doesn’t recognise Hilary Duff at the school ball is arguably one of the biggest plot holes of the noughties.

It has baffled fans for years: Why would Chad’s character Austin (aka ‘Nomad’) be fooled by such a teeny tiny masquerade mask? Especially when Sam, played by Hilary, had only served him that day in her family’s diner.

Now Hilary herself has opened up to Cosmopolitan about that very scene. “That is so funny,” Hilary told us. “Maybe he got hit in the head too many time during football?”

In case you’d forgotten, Chad’s character, popular boy Austin, is the star quarterback of North Valley High School in the 2004 film. He and Sam had been exchanging texts for some time under their pseudonyms ‘Nomad’ and ‘Princeton Girl’, after meeting online.

Hilary added, “It was pretty recognisably me, right? I don't even know if that was even a question [that came up] on set! That is so good. I don't know what to say about that. There was definitely a problem with the script there.”

Hilary, who is pregnant with her third child, also questioned Sam’s choice of outfit for the ball in the modern day take on Cinderella.

Sam goes to the ball as Cinderella, wearing a huge meringue wedding dress, while Chad is dressed as Prince Charming.

“Cinderella did NOT wear a wedding dress,” joked Hilary. “That was fully a wedding dress. Where did she get that thing?!”

Well now we know. Hilary is as in the dark about it all as us. Still one of the best films of all time though.
