Hillary Clinton called Barack Obama to say ‘I’m sorry’ after losing election to Donald Trump

Hillary Clinton telephoned Barack Obama and told him, ‘I’m sorry’, after losing the US presidential election to Donald Trump, a new book has revealed.

She made the call to the outgoing president just minutes after phoning Mr Trump to congratulate him on his election win.

She phoned from the Peninsula Hotel in Manhattan and said: ‘Congratulations, Donald. I’ll be supportive of the country’s success and that means your success as president.’

The events surrounding the collapse of Mrs Clinton’s bid for the White House last November are detailed in an upcoming book, Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Election Campaign.

Extracts from the book appeared in a review published in the Washington Post, and reveal that Mr Obama told Mrs Clinton when it was time to concede to Mr Trump.

The book, written by political journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, says Mrs Clinton knew she had ‘let her country down’ and that Mr Obama’s previous eight years’ of work lay ‘shattered at Donald Trump’s feet’.

With results coming in for key swing states pointing to a Trump win, Mr Obama called Mrs Clinton and told her: ‘You need to concede.’

The book claims that Mr Obama ‘didn’t see any point in prolonging the inevitable’.

Mrs Clinton then called Mr Trump and conceded. They spoke for about a minute and he is said to have credited her for being a tough opponent.

The call took place at about 2.30am.

After this conversation, Mr Obama called her again. The book says: ‘Hillary winces. She wasn’t ready for this conversation.

‘She had let him down. She had let herself down. She had let her party down. And she had let her country down.

‘Obama’s legacy and her dreams of the presidency lay shattered at Donald Trump’s feet. This was on her. Reluctantly she rose from her seat and took the phone. “Mr President”, she said softly. “I’m sorry”.’

When drafting her concession speech, Mrs Clinton refused to criticise Mr Trump as per her aides’ wishes, saying she wanted a ‘gracious exit’.

The book says that Mrs Clinton was told by one of her advisors in early 2016 that Mr Trump could beat her to the presidency.

A memo read: ‘FACT: Donald Trump can defeat Hillary Clinton and become the 45th President of the United States.’
