Hillary Clinton slams 'inexplicable' media coverage of Meghan Markle: 'Shame on everybody'

Hillary Clinton is "a huge Meghan Markle fan".

During an interview with The Sunday Times, the former presidential candidate and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, shared their feelings about the Duchess of Sussex for the first time and called out the "inexplicable" way that she's been treated since becoming a royal.

"I'm a huge Meghan Markle fan," Hillary said. "I do want to say that the way she's been treated is inexplicable. If the explanation is that she's biracial, then shame on everybody."

The former First Lady added that she thinks that Markle's race is "certainly part of it" when it comes to how she's portrayed and covered by international media.

Chelsea, 39, chimed in, adding that she considers the fact that Meghan was an actress for years, known for her longtime role on "Suits," to also be a contributing factor.

"She proudly had a career first and has a voice that she thankfully continues to use," Chelsea said. "Anyone who has the temerity to break the mould of what has previously been established and expected often, unfortunately, receives criticism and bile that I don't understand. We've seen this pattern repeatedly."

"I don't know her, but as someone who respects her, I'm so grateful that she persists and is unbowed and is doing work she feels called to do," she added. "And isn't willing to be bullied."

Of course, the Clintons aren't the only people to think that certain media outlets have crossed the line when it comes to their reporting on Meghan Markle: Earlier this month, Prince Harry released a statement denouncing the "bullying" that his wife has been subject to in British tabloids and announced that he would be "taking legal action" against the Mail on Sunday for publishing a handwritten letter that Meghan wrote to her father.

One week later, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke of Sussex had also filed claims in the High Court against News UK, which is the parent company of The Sun, and MGN, the parent company of The Mirror. Both claims are in regards to alleged illegal interception of voicemails.
