Historic Ayrshire clothing shop closes its doors for final time after more than 125 years
An historic Ayrshire clothing store has closed its doors for the final after more than 125 years of trading.
Balmoral Mill Shop, in Galston, East Ayrshire, was known for its quality knitwear – which had been manufactured on site until 2018 – before closing their doors for the final time this week.
Five generations of the Mackie family have overseen the business which has survived through two world wars and two pandemics.
However, the current owners have decided to sell up and retire with the last remaining stock going for auction on Friday, January 24.
Founded in 1896, Balmoral Mill originally manufactured knitwear from their factory in Galston.
It continued to be manufactured and sold on site until 2018 when the business moved to only supply knitwear including school wear and embroidered garments.
