The historic British dog breeds facing extinction because they're no longer fashionable

Historic British dog breeds such as the Skye terrier and Sussex spaniel are facing extinction, according to new data.

Rejected in favour of more fashionable, celebrity-endorsed breeds, these pedigrees have seen their fortunes decline.

The Kennel Club recorded just 53 registrations of bloodhound puppies last year, for example, while more than 5,200 chihuahuas were registered.

Experts say a birth rate of 300 puppies a year is needed to guarantee a healthy population, meaning these breeds are now facing extinction.

Bill Lambert, of the Kennel Club, says British terriers are now sadly out of vogue.

“They often get bored and cause mischief if left alone. That’s a problem in families where both parents work.”

Here are the Kennel Club’s 12 most endangered British pedigrees, with the number of registrations for each in the past year.
