Historic Summercourt Fair returns for 790th year
A historic fair which has been in Cornwall every year for almost 800 years is making its return. Summercourt Fair has had a Royal charter for 790 years. The charter fair is said to date back to 1234, but stopped in 2019 and could not return while the Covid pandemic was ongoing.
Now run by the Rowland family since taking over the event in 2021, Cornwall's oldest charter fair is set to kick off once again next week. Organisers said the fair, in Summercourt, between Truro and Newquay, will once again be welcoming traders back to its famous street market for the first time in five years.
On offer this year will be bakeries, hot food traders, ice cream, hair braiding, face painting, craft stalls, toy stalls. The funfair will open 2pm on fair day and the characters Bluey and sonic will also make an appearance at 4.45pm for 30 minutes outside of the London Inn Pub.

A spokesman for the fair said: "That’s not all, the funfair continues from Wednesday, September 25, right through to Sunday September 29. There will also be a fun filled day on Saturday September 28 where we will have a special visit of Showmen’s Steam Engines that were used to power local funfair rides 100 years ago. And following the historic theme, we will also have real life looking dinosaurs roaming the ground too from 2pm onwards."
Last year's rides included the King Sizzler, Tagada, Over The Falls 130ft high and the UK's only Rock Rage. Meanhile the biggest monster truck seen in Cornwall will be crushing cars and jumping over obstacles to the delight of crowds.
The parking for the event will be in the car park on St Austell Street or in and around the village.
