HMRC has urged parents to claim Child Benefit using the HMRC app to receive their payment “within a week”. A new YouTube video from HMRC looks at how you claim Child Benefit online, including the information and documents you'll need to have to hand when you are making your claim.

It doesn’t take long to claim Child Benefit. Scroll down to ‘make a claim online’ - click ‘Start Now’ and you’ll be given the option to sign in using your Government Gateway account, or to create one if you haven’t one already.

HMRC warned: "Please do this, as if you don’t sign in you may need to print out your claim form and post it to us. It will then take longer to receive your first payment. To sign in you’ll need your user ID and password. If you haven’t already got an account, it’s easy to set one up. To do this you will need: an email address, your mobile phone , your National Insurance number - or postcode and two forms of ID to prove your identity.

You’ll also need to have their passport or travel documents. You’ll be guided through the simple claims process with short questions about you and your child and if you have one - about your partner. Once you've finished, you’ll be asked to submit your claim online.

For one child, this benefit is worth £1,331.20 a year, or for two children, you will get £2,212.60 a year. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s director general for customer services, commented: “With more babies set to be born on September 26 than any other day, we hope that parents of these newborns take full advantage of their Child Benefit entitlement.

“We’ve made it simpler than ever to claim online and receive a first payment within as little as three days – so download the app today or search on GOV.UK."
