Hoda Muthana: US refuses to readmit Alabama woman who joined ISIS

Donald Trump has said a woman who left the US to join the Islamic State group in Syria will not be allowed to return.

The president said he had instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to allow Hoda Muthana, 24, back into the country.

Her lawyer is challenging a claim that she is not a US citizen after Mr Pompeo said she had “no legal basis” to travel to the US.

In a brief statement, Mr Pompeo gave no details as to how the administration made their determination.

"Ms Hoda Muthana is not a US citizen and will not be admitted into the United States," he said.

"She does not have any legal basis, no valid US passport, no right to a passport nor any visa to travel to the United States."

But the Alabama woman’s lawyer insisted Ms Muthana was born in the US and had a valid passport before she joined ISIS in 2014.

He said she has renounced the terrorist group and wants to come home to protect her 18-month-old son regardless of legal consequences.

"She's an American. Americans break the law," her lawyer said.

"When people break the law, we have a legal system to handle those kinds of situations to hold people accountable, and that's all she's asking for."

The announcement came a day after Britain said that it was stripping the citizenship of Shamima Begum.
