Holby City fans have praised the performance of actor David Ames following an episode concerning his character Dom Copeland's relationship with abusive ex-boyfriend Isaac Mayfield (Marc Elliott).

Isaac made a shock return to Holby last week following a prison stint. On tonight's episode (May 21), Isaac came to the hospital with his father Jon (Geoffrey Leesley), who was in desperate need of medical attention.

Isaac's appearance in the hospital caused a dilemma for the staff who knew of his history with Dom. While they all had a duty of care to his father, they didn't want Isaac anywhere near the hospital.

As Dom's co-workers thought he had been blindsided by Isaac's arrival, a series of flashbacks showed that Dom had previously been in touch with Isaac and met up with him, after an argument with his husband Lofty.

During their meeting, Isaac had also mentioned bringing a family member to the hospital for treatment.

The flashback scenes showed that when the pair met, Isaac asked Dom to forgive him and said he had thought about him the whole time he was going through 'hell' in prison.

While trying to convince Dom he had changed, Isaac even tried to provoke him into attacking him, but Dom wouldn't rise to the bait.

Instead, Dom ended up breaking down in Isaac's arms as he let all his emotions out.

On Twitter, fans of the show heaped praise on actor David Ames for his performance in the particularly difficult scenes.

In the end, it was discovered that Isaac's father has breast cancer and Dom was the one to break the news to his ex.

While it remains to be seen if anything will happen between them, actor Marc Elliott has hinted that Dom could be drawn back to Isaac.

"I think it's a 'moth to a flame' type of thing," he told Digital Spy. "There's no doubt about it: Isaac was an abusive bastard in their relationship. He was a horrible human, and really controlling, and he was a nasty bit of work.

"But with Stockholm Syndrome or whatever, there's still something that's fatally alluring about Isaac."

Holby City airs Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
