Charlie Condou has revealed he's left Holby City, less than half a year after joining the BBC soap.

The former Coronation Street star – who stars as consultant Ben Sherwood – made his debut on the series on September 19. But, during a chat with Lorraine Kelly on her ITV breakfast show recently, he explained that it was only ever meant to be "a little stint."

"The door was very much left open," the 47-year-old added. "I've had conversations with them, you never know, watch this space."

Last year Condou spoke to Digital Spy about his exit, saying: "I am not sure what will happen long-term or if they've got any plans to bring me back at some point" but added that he had really enjoyed the experience.

"It's been fantastic. I've genuinely loved it and it's been one of the happiest places I've worked. It's been great."

News of Condou's exit comes just days after Ben shocked fans by kissing Dominic Copeland (David Ames), despite the fact that he's dating Dom's best friend Essie (Kaye Wragg). In last night's episode (February 25), Ben insisted to Dom that the smooch was "no big deal" – although, his plans to pop the question to Essie suggest otherwise.

"It makes it all the more awkward," Condou smirked, as he looked ahead to the dramas about to unfold between the threesome before his character exits.

Talking on Lorraine about how keen he would be to continue working on Holby City if the opportunity presented itself, the actor noted the convenience of the hospital drama's filming locations.

"I loved my time at Coronation Street but being in Manchester was really difficult because my family were in London and I wasn't getting to see them," he admitted. "Holby's perfect because I can drop my kids off at school and be at Holby in 15 minutes."

Holby City airs on BBC One.
