Following last week's bombshell that Bernie Wolfe was missing in action, Holby City delivered more tragic news to Cameron and Serena tonight (July 23).

Bernie's son Cameron (Nic Jackman) and former partner Serena (Catherine Russell) were hoping to hear that Bernie could still be alive, but their worst nightmares came true when Bernie's ex-girlfriend Alex Dawson arrived at the hospital to bring some devastating news.

Viewers will remember that army medic Alex (played by former Waterloo Road star Heather Peace) was introduced back in 2016, when the show started to explore Bernie's (Jemma Redgrave) past.

Following Alex's appearance, fans of the soap learned that she'd had an affair with Bernie while they were on duty in Afghanistan but Bernie had decided to end things and focus on her family and work at Holby instead.

However, Tuesday's episode brought the heartbreaking news that Bernie had been killed in a blast while serving her time in the army.

While Cameron didn't want to talk to Alex as he refused to believe that his mother hadn't survived the explosion, Serena agreed to listen to her about her connection to Bernie. Alex revealed that she and Bernie were engaged.

But it wasn't that easy for Serena either, as she struggled to come to terms with the fact that Bernie is dead, following their long-distance relationship which sadly came to an end last December.

Considering the huge fanbase Serena and Bernie have, viewers watching at home were left heartbroken after Holby aired the tragic scenes – and some couldn't hold back tears.

Holby City airs on BBC One.
