Hollie Doyle has set a new record for the most wins by a female jockey in a calendar year in Great Britain, after riding her 107th winner of the campaign at Southwell on Thursday.

The 23-year-old surpassed Josephine Gordon’s mark of 106 wins, set in 2017, when partnering the David Barron-trained Class Clown to victory in the Ladbrokes Where The Nation Plays Nursery Handicap.

Earlier this season, Doyle had become only the third female jockey to reach the landmark of 100 winners in a year, joining Gordon and Hayley Turner, who herself became the first female to win at Royal Ascot for more than 30 years at this season’s meeting.

“I set out to ride as many winners as I could this year so to achieve a new British record for female jockeys is very satisfying and a wonderful way to end 2019,” Doyle said.

“The fact that it was only two years ago that Josie set the last record is really positive and goes to show women are being given more rides every year.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky this year to avoid injury and to work for amazing trainers and owners, so I’d like that to continue and to have even more winners in 2020.”
