Holly Willoughby in hysterics as she ‘replaces’ Phillip Schofield with Jimmy Carr on This Morning

Phillip Schofield came close to losing his job to Jimmy Carr after the comedian stepped in to take over This Morning.

It was all downhill for Schofield on Thursday after his co-host Holly Willoughby “replaced” him with Carr before the 8 out of 10 Cats star presented a segment.

“He’s back and he says he thinks presenting This Morning,” Willoughby said before announcing Schofield’s name instead of Carr's.

Bursting into laughter on realising her slip up, she said: “I’ve actually just introduced him as you. I think I might have replaced you instantly.”

Schofield, who held his head in his hands, said: “I don’t even know what happened there. That was so fast in your head. Do I mean so little to you?”

He later asked if Carr would like him to “go” after the comedian was praised by Willoughby for delivering a run down of the show after an ad break.

“Welcome back to Jimmy Carr’s This Morning,” he said. “Still to come on the show, close your eyes and breathe very deeply, we’re taking part in a live meditation class.”

He went on to mention actor Danny DeVito’s interview before tackling a tongue twister on introducing chef Clodagh McKenna’s “sumptuous, succulent, special, speedy salmon supper”.

But he was quick to knock back her recipe, joking: “It’s a bit of salmon, don’t get carried away.”

Carr received a round of applause from the studio staff before asking: “Do I get the job?”

Schofield asked: “Do I go now?”

Keen to take over, Carr joked: “If you could.”

Carr was on the show to promote his Netflix special Jimmy Carr: The Best of, Ultimate, Gold, Greatest Hits.

This Morning is on ITV, weekdays at 10:30am
