Holly Willoughby found herself in tears on today’s episode of This Morning after Phillip Schofield carried out an elaborate April Fool’s Day prank.

The ruse was constructed around a makeover segment in which a 46-year-old mum named Carol received a new look from the show’s Glam Squad ahead of her 25th wedding anniversary.

She emerged wearing a garish pink dress paired with white boots, alongside heavy make-up and curly blonde hair.

Carol could be seen becoming upset and asked the cameras to “stop filming” as the desperate hosts tried to console her.

Willoughby was keen to reassure her that she could change the look, but Schofield ushered Carol and her husband into a waiting car where they were set to be whisked off for a fancy lunch.

The car then crashed into a crate on the way out of the studio and caught fire, causing Willoughby to try to throw to a break.

Schofield, however, interrupted her to reveal the prank and a stunned Willoughby cried with relief as she realised it had all been set up.

“That was awful. I was panicking so much,” said the 38-year-old host, adding “oh my god, you… no, I can’t swear but I really want to”.

Fans of This Morning declared their approval for the prank on social media.

Schofield, however, got a taste of his own medicine as he fell victim to an April Fool’s Day prank started by DJ Chris Moyles, who encouraged the hashtag #happy60thphillipschofield to spread on Twitter.

While today is the host’s birthday, he is turning 57 – still a few years away from 60.

Willoughby eventually composed herself and was able to continue presenting the rest of the show, though she was very pleased to be moving on to an item about gin afterwards, saying she “needed a drink” after the shock.
