Warning: This article contains major spoilers from Tuesday's E4 first-look episode, which some readers may prefer to avoid.
Hollyoaks never does things by halves. After more than a week of fierce fan speculation over plans for some mysterious flashforward scenes, the show's writers have just shocked us all by giving us a sneak peek at the funeral of a major character.
Tuesday's E4 first-look episode (February 13) featured several scenes that offered a tantalising glimpse of the future – and it was bad news for fans of a certain schemer! Here, we're unpicking the biggest questions and theories after the jaw-dropping episode.
1. What – or who – kills Sienna Blake?
Say it ain't so! Hollyoaks' special episode featured a number of scenes showing the emotional villagers paying their last respects at an upcoming funeral. For a while it seemed that Cleo McQueen might be the unlucky death victim, but the show soon pulled the rug from under our feet by revealing that fan favourite Sienna Blake was actually being laid to rest. Noooooo!
We now know that Sienna is in remission after her battle against cancer, so it seems unlikely that her sad demise will be health-related. One thing we can say for sure is that Sienna's had her fair share of enemies over the years, so will her death be the village's next shock murder? Speaking of which…
2. Did Cleo's devil card foreshadow her killing Sienna?
The claws are out and the battle is on for Joel Dexter. Scenes set in the present day in Tuesday's episode saw Sienna threaten to kill Cleo if she ever steals Joel away from her. When Cleo promised to do just that, spiteful Sienna responded by warning: "Over my dead body." Talk about tempting fate...
All of the clues right now seem to be pointing to the possibility that Cleo is somehow responsible for Sienna's death. Could a catfight between the new rivals go terribly wrong, or might Cleo go one step further and actually plot her enemy's murder?
Cleo was also seen receiving the "devil" card from Myra's Cards of Fate. Was this an early clue that she's turning to the dark side?
3. Is Sienna REALLY dead?
Hollyoaks has a history of messing with our heads (we haven't forgotten the Mercedes death fake-out, for example) so we have to ask – is Sienna really going to be killed off? She's undoubtedly been one of the show's biggest characters since her arrival in 2012, so some would argue that she's just too good to have the door slammed shut like that.
Of course, if Anna Passey really has decided to bow out from her role after nearly six years, it would only be fitting for Hollyoaks to give her an explosive exit storyline. But could there be more to this? Is the future from the flashforward scenes really all it seems? We'll be keeping our eyes peeled with this one.
Props also to Joel for keeping the exact date of Sienna's death under wraps with that well-placed thumb in the picture above.
4. Does Alfie find love again?
Alfie Nightingale's current storyline sees him building a robot that resembles his late girlfriend Jade Albright – and firmly vowing that he'll never love anybody else. But is that a promise that Alfie won't be able to keep in the long-run?
The popular teen's own time jump scene showed him all set to marry the girl of his dreams in three months' time, although he did seem quite flustered as he was running late, and wasn't even sure whether she'd turn up. So, is Alfie about to get married? Who will his new love interest be?
5. Does Adam become a killer?
Adam Donovan may be one of the village's good guys, but it looks like his villainous father Glenn has other ideas! The Donovan family's time jump scenes showed dangerous Glenn handing a gun to Adam, instructing him that it should be used to take out a "grass".
Another glimpse at the future saw a panicking Adam holding the gun as Glenn urged him to fire it. But who is the traitor that Glenn is so bothered about? Could it be another member of their family? Is Adam going to become the village's next killer?
6. Are the other cards significant?
Although Marnie didn't get a flashforward scene, she was given the Empress card in the episode – just like she was on Hollyoaks' Instagram page last week. So, does this hint at a new Marnie storyline ahead?
A number of other characters who didn't feature much in the episode also had their fates "revealed" on Hollyoaks' Instagram page over the past week, including Sami as the Emperor, Myra and Sally as the troubled Lovers, and Peri as the Hermit. Just how significant will these clues be to future episodes? Only time will tell...
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
