Hollyoaks spoilers for Thursday, March 26's first-look episode on E4 follow.
Hollyoaks slipped a sneaky joke into a very emotional scene this evening.
The soap is still reeling from the shocking death of Liam Donovan at the Devil's Dinner Party, with Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) now plotting her revenge against Grace Black (Tamara Wall) and James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) for shooting her.
Thursday's first-look episode on E4 included a very emotional scene where Grace Black decided to turn herself into police, in hopes of sparing her family any further harm.
In a heart-wrenching moment, Grace bid farewell to her son Curtis (Charlie Hughes) and sister-in-law Courtney Donovan (Amy Conachan) before setting off to the police station.
Even eagle-eyed viewers may have missed that writers included a comic Easter egg in this otherwise heartbreaking moment — in the form of a newspaper headline.
As Grace passed the newspaper box, the camera flashed quickly to a calendar-themed headline joke: "Calendar thieves sentenced, Each gets 12 months." Those clever writers!
Hollyoaks has become famous for its sneaky Easter eggs — having recently made a reference to Brookside's infamous "body under the patio" plot in honour of the 16th anniversary of the soap's final episode.
During the holiday season last year, the soap also made a cheeky reference to the "creepy child" in The Muppet Christmas Carol — a character played by none other than Hollyoaks star Jessica Fox, aka Nancy Osborne!
Keep an eye out for the next Hollyoaks Easter egg...
Hollyoaks airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm. Wednesdays through Fridays on E4 will feature classic episodes called Hollyoaks Favourites to compensate for the soap suspending filming in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
