Deeply emotional Christmas scenes have aired for Luke Morgan and Cindy Cunningham in Hollyoaks.

In the wake of the recognisable Luke slipping away recently as his frontotemporal dementia progresses, viewers have seen a flashback to the fan-favourite character in better days to save Christmas for his partner Cindy.

In Wednesday's (December 22) first-look episode on E4, Zara wasn't thrilled with Cindy scheduling every aspect of Christmas Day, right down to the timeslot to open gifts.

"I just want today to be special," she explained. "I want Luke to walk in here and be amazed."

With Luke feeling gloomy about the day, Mandy joined Zara and Cindy to decorate the house so it was absolutely shimmering with tinsel and ornaments.

The trio then found a package Luke had been working on with gifts for every year until DJ turns 18 so his son will always know he loves him even after he's gone.

Cindy got a moment of joy when she opened a present from Luke, revealing a red dress many sizes too big. The sizing made her laugh because Luke made similar problems in past years.

She even managed to customise the dress so it'd fit but came back downstairs to find Luke having forgotten they were together and now flirting with Mandy.

"Why don't you give [Mandy] that red dress?" Luke asked Cindy. "[She'd] look a knock-out in that."

With Cindy inconsolable, Zara and Ollie found something that actually saved Christmas — a message Luke had recorded for Cindy during one of his lucid moments back in July.

"I bet you look smoking in that dress. I've always loved you in that colour," he told her. "I guess I thought, I'd make a video. That way, at least, if I can't tell you in person on the day, you'll be able to know exactly how much you meant to me.

"Seriously, I've pinballed from one disaster to another in my life, but these last few years have been the happiest I've ever had, even with my diagnosis."

The message closed with Luke leaving Cindy with tears of joy as he thanked her for taking a chance on him and making him a better man.
