Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Hollyoaks has aired a sad death for one of the villagers in tonight's E4 first-look episode as Luke Morgan's mum Sue passed away.
Sue Morgan (Marian McLoughlin) returned to Hollyoaks earlier this year with some heartbreaking news for her son Luke (Gary Lucy), as she revealed that she had been diagnosed with a terminal heart condition.
In recent weeks, fans have seen Luke struggle to cope as Sue's health worsened while Sue herself has been determined to split up Luke and his girlfriend Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring), but things reached a head in tonight's (July 5) episode as Luke lashed out at his mum for meddling in his relationship.
At the start of Monday's first-look episode, Luke insisted that Sue needed to move out for opposing his relationship with Cindy so much and causing problems between them.
"What I need right now is you to stay out of my life," Luke told Sue. "If it wasn't for you, I'd still be with Cindy. You know what, mum, why don't you just pack your bags and go?"
As a shocked Sue exclaimed that he couldn't treat his mum this way and added that she loved him, Luke said: "Do you? Right now I feel like I don't have a mother."
Later, Sue shared a heart-to-heart with Mandy (Sarah Jayne Dunn), who insisted that Cindy and Luke are great together, and that Cindy is just the person that Luke needs by his side as he faces a life without Sue.
And it seems Mandy's words got through to Sue, as she later apologised to Cindy and encouraged her to stand by Luke, sharing her own regrets about not being there for her son.
"Cindy, my son needs you more than he's ever needed me," Sue said. "So, please, if you really love him, stay."
As Cindy admitted that she does love Luke, she also opened up about her own fears for Luke's future health before walking away in tears.
Soon afterwards, however, Cindy and Luke finally met up again for a heart-to-heart about their relationship and agreed to give things another go.
"You deserve better than this, Cindy," Luke told her. "The truth is, I only pushed you away because of what's going to happen to me. You deserve someone you can laugh and grow old with, not some fella you probably won't recognise."
"Despite everything, knowing what's coming," Cindy added. "I want to spend my life with you."
But when the newly-reunited couple arrived home, they were devastated to find that Sue had died and Luke broke down as he bid his mum a final, emotional farewell.
"You rest, ok? Cindy's here, everything's going to be okay," he told his mum. "I love you so much."
Hollyoaks airs weekdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm.
