Hollyoaks has aired tragic scenes showing Cindy Cunningham breaking down over Luke's illness.

It looked as though Cindy felt a glimmer of hope in the soaps' Christmas special when she received a moving message Luke recorded for her back in July in case his frontotemporal dementia had progressed by December.

Thursday's (December 23) first-look episode saw Mandy walking in on Cindy watching Luke's video on repeat and vowing that she'd "bring him back" somehow.

Mandy was soon called away to deal with the news that Ella is having a baby with boyfriend Charlie, so Cindy took Luke to have a kickabout with Hilton and Zara.

Nothing quite went to plan because Hilton fell off the nearby swing when Luke wasn't watching him, so they had to rush him to the hospital.

Cindy was distraught to find out Hilton had fractured his arm, only for Luke to brush it off and read both her and Zara the same Christmas joke he'd been telling all day.

"It's not my fault he fell," Luke insisted, with Cindy firing back: "I know it's not your fault! It's your illness!"

After Cindy ordered a downtrodden Luke to leave, she confided in Zara that she realised Hilton's accident wasn't his fault but can't reckon with the fact that the partner she loves is slipping away.

"I think we need to look at our options," Zara acknowledged. "I think we need power of attorney."

Zara explained that she had to stop Luke from giving one of the McQueens a raw burger the other day, so they'd have to get him to stop working "at the very least".

Luke reacted badly when he found the power of attorney paperwork, knocking over the Christmas tree and ripping off a cupboard door in a fit of rage.

As Cindy tried to reason with him, Luke angrily ordered her to "get over" the accident with Hilton but she desperately explained she couldn't do that.

"The man who made that Christmas message for me is gone, isn't he?" she realised. "I'm left with whoever you are."

After more hurtful words about how her 'her Luke' was "gone", they both saw a worried Hilton had been watching their entire outburst. Luke angrily stormed out as Cindy broke down to end the emotional episode.

Hollyoaks airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look screenings at 7pm on E4. Selected omnibus episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video.
