In case you didn't know, Gary Lucy is reprising his role as Luke Morgan in Hollyoaks for the first time in 15 years.

And despite his last soap role being in EastEnders, the 35-year-old is hoping Hollyoaks will "smash" the rival BBC show at next year's British Soap Awards.

Speaking to Now magazine, he said: "I'm hoping we absolutely smash them and all the other soaps at next year's Soap Awards.

"It's like an Arsenal footballer when they move team – I'm devastated, especially when they are playing for Chelsea or Man City.

"Now I'm that turncoat, I suppose!"

It comes after the actor revealed that some "fantastic" storylines are in store for his character, but Luke is "not the same person" after all those years away.

"Luke is definitely not the same person and it is definitely not for the better," he said. "Hopefully it'll make for good viewing though.

"The producer Bryan Kirkwood talked me through some fantastic stories and I thought it was a great opportunity to bring back my favourite telly character."

Gary's original stint on the show saw his character Luke involved in some hard-hitting storylines, including a male rape plot and his character's later struggle with depression, ultimately leading to a suicide attempt.

Luke left Hollyoaks to become a school football coach in Canada, but returned briefly in 2002 for his parents' second wedding.

His work on the soap earned him the title of Best Newcomer at the 2000 British Soap Awards, and he followed up his Hollyoaks stint with roles on Footballers' Wives, The Bill and, of course, EastEnders.

Hollyoaks airs weekdays on Channel 4 and E4.
