Hollyoaks boss confirms two characters who survive cast cull

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks' commissioning executive Ben Wadey has announced two of the characters to survive the cast cull in September.

It was announced earlier this year that the Channel 4 soap would be going down to three episodes a week, while a big chunk of the cast and crew would be let go.

Plenty of characters have left this year already (not all related to these changes), but fans are wondering who will vanish in the time jump that kicks off the new era.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival (via The Sun), Wadey revealed that Mercedes McQueen and Ste Hay, two of the soap's most popular characters, will still be around.

Mercedes has been at the centre of some major storylines this year, giving birth to twins that, in a huge twist actually based on real life, have two different dads (Warren Fox and Felix Westwood).

Ste's storylines this year saw him accidentally kill Warren's daughter Ella, and then he was roped into the Blue revenge plot. He also cheated on his husband James Nightingale in the toilets at court ahead of his own trial, no less.

Wadey also revealed that the soap will be "blowing a load of stuff up in good Hollyoaks fashion" in September, just before the time jump.

The final week of Hollyoaks prior to these major changes kicks off on September 2. It will see six episodes and a recap special hosted by Rob Beckett.

Then, the first three-episode week follows with the big stunts, and the week after that, it's the time jump.

In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy, Hollyoaks' executive producer Hannah Cheers recently explained: "We had to think about whether the stunt would come first or the flashforward. We tried every which way of working through."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
