Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood has heavily hinted that classic characters could return for the Channel 4 show's 25th anniversary.

The soap began in 1995, and Kirkwood revealed that the producers have been exploring the possibility of bringing back characters from "the very early days of the show" to celebrate the anniversary in style.

"We've got John Paul McQueen and Warren Fox returning with amazing James Sutton and Jamie Lomas arriving," he told The Sun.

"They're on screen in January, which sets off the 25th year really nicely.

"We are talking about going further back in time to the very early days of the show [for returns] as we approach the 25th birthday in October, but there's nothing confirmed yet."

Plans are already in motion for the anniversary in 2020, with Tony Hutchinson's villainous sister set to be introduced. Tony's manipulative and narcissistic dad Edward (Joe McGann) will also play a significant part in the 25th anniversary storylines.

"Edward is one of the biggest villains the show has seen – and viewers will discover that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when his daughter joins him in the village," a Hollyoaks source told Digital Spy.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
