Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood has shared some early gossip on Christmas storylines in an exclusive chat with Digital Spy.

The Channel 4 soap has some big festive treats lined up for its loyal fans this year – including two hour-long specials which will air at Christmas and New Year.

As has become tradition over the past few years, Channel 4 has rewarded Hollyoaks with two 60-minute slots over the festive season – allowing the team to write specially-extended episodes which are jam-packed full of big storylines.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Bryan revealed: "We've got a wonderful Christmas episode coming up. Once again, we've been given an hour-long slot for our Christmas and New Year episodes. We're delighted by that and the great relationship we have with Channel 4.

"This year, it's all about Christmas at the Cunninghams' with Milo. We have a celebration in The Dog with our wonderful new lads Damon and Brody, who are left in charge of the pub and throw a riotous Christmas party.

"It also wouldn't be Christmas in soap without the arrival of a baby! Courtney gives birth to her much-longed-for daughter. It's a real punch-the-air moment to see that brilliant battler get what she's always wanted."

But if you thought Christmas with the Cunninghams sounded fun, that may not necessarily be the case as DS Armstrong will be back on the prowl. Could this mean trouble for Cindy, his previous stalking victim?

Reacting to Armstrong's unlikely popularity with fans, Bryan added: "It's always a treat when you didn't plan on a character being an integral part of the show, only to have them suddenly catch the audience's imagination.

"Trevor Royle is another really good example of that. His first storyline saw him driving a truck full of trafficked people, but he ended up being a worshipped legend of the show!

"We do have a festive return ahead for DS Armstrong. He features rather heavily in our Christmas episode, which is a big, colourful camp treat."

Hollyoaks airs on weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look screenings at 6.30pm on Channel 4.
