It has been confirmed that Sally will play a role in next week’s explosive stunt episodes, but that she won’t be returning after the much-anticipated time jump – which will air from Monday, September 16.

Speaking to Digital Spy at a press event, Wallace confirmed her exit from the soap, but shared firm hopes that her character might return in future.

She said: "The day that we were all told ‘yay’ or ‘nay’, Hannah [Cheers, executive producer] made it quite clear that they didn’t want to lose Sally and they weren’t killing her off. So, there’s every chance that you will see Sally again.

"Whether that’s six months, or a year, or two years, who knows? I don’t think it’s the last we’ve seen of Sally St. Claire, to be honest."

In playing Sally, Wallace made history when she joined Hollyoaks, becoming the first transgender person to play a regular transgender character in a British soap opera.

Reflecting on her time on the Channel 4 soap, Wallace said: "It’s been great, it’s been my dream. I didn’t set out to be a trans actress, I set out to be an actor in whatever that was. I didn’t necessarily see the need to come out and be a ‘flag waver’ for the queer community.

"It just kind of happened, because this role came up and I went for it, thinking that I’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain – except that I’ll have to be really public, and that was a bit daunting."

"But I decided to do it," she continued, "and it paid off, and it was great. I got to explore lots of interesting situations. The John Paul and Myra story, that was all very central to Sally’s life, and that was really good to do, in all its ups and downs."

But there is one more important story that Sally didn’t get to play during her tenure on the soap, that Wallace would be keen to explore should she return in future.

"I just wish that Sally had had a chance to meet someone and find a proper love story," she said. "Ee never quite got there with that. So, I don’t know. Maybe she’ll come back with someone, who knows?"

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
