Hollyoaks has confirmed that Ray Quinn will be leaving once the racism storyline comes to an end.

Although it isn't a huge surprise given the nature of Quinn's far-right character Jonny Baxter, showrunner Bryan Kirkwood told Metro that the star's time on the Channel 4 soap will come to an end.

"He is gobsmackingly good," he said. "He's so charming and sweet in real life, and he has grown up on television sets and X Factor green rooms – he has got no life experience comparable to what he is performing on screen.

"Yet, he is so compelling, fierce, and horrible. I just think he is extraordinary.

"So it's a bittersweet thing. I would have loved to have had Ray Quinn for the next ten years. But equally, to have him for one year like this has been a really good thing."

Meanwhile, Kieron Richardson has said that his character Ste Hay may never be able to forgive himself, after the far-right extremist group's terrorist plot led to Jonny's bomb exploding in the garden and injuring Yasmine Maalik.

"I don't think he's ever going to get over this actually," he said.

"I think it will be something that will always be with him. The fact that he was groomed to hate someone."

Hollyoaks airs Mondays through Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm.
