Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks newcomer Denise Welch has revealed that her character Trish Minniver's storyline will "become much darker" as it progresses, teasing that finding out details about the plot "is what drew me in".

The actress will make her debut on the soap as Maxine Minniver (Nikki Sanderson)'s mum Trish on Wednesday (January 20) and her arrival will be far from drama-free, as the week begins with Maxine enjoying a flirtation with new arrival Brad King (Tom Benedict Knight).

She later shares a kiss with Brad – who also happens to be her new landlord – but is stunned when her mum Trish unexpectedly shows up in the village, revealing that Brad is actually her boyfriend.

Trish doesn't believe Maxine when she tries to explain what happened between her and Brad and actress Welch has revealed to Inside Soap that Trish and Maxine's "quite fractious" relationship won't be made easier by Brad's involvement.

"Maxine is ultimately pleased to see Trish. I think all little girls want their mum, no matter how strained the relationship has been," she said. "So she is glad that Trish – who insists on being called Trish and not mum – is back in her life.

"But while there is a very camp, funny element to the storyline, it will become much darker..."

When asked what sort of dark twist we can expect from the plot in the long-term, Welch teased that the storyline could be heading down an issue-based path in future.

"Brad and Trish are clearly quite narcissistic," she explained. "We all know that Hollyoaks excels with issue-led storylines, and where this one is going is what drew me in.

"Maxine was always trying to please her mum when she was younger, yet Trish put her at the back of the class, and that's a metaphor for their relationship. There's a lot of passive-aggressive behaviour running through it. But also a lot of fun. So as an actor, it's amazing!"

The actress, who is also known for her roles in Coronation Street and Waterloo Road, added that Trish is "completely blinded by Brad", meaning that he could potentially get away with a lot of bad behaviour.

"He could do something in front of her eyes, and Trish would choose to blame Maxine for it," she said. "She knows that Brad is a player – however, she's the person that would always blame the other women."

With this plot just getting started, we can expect to see a lot more from Trish, Maxine and Brad's story in the coming months.

Hollyoaks airs new episodes from Monday to Thursday and will resume airing five new episodes per week from Monday, January 18 on Channel 4 and E4.
