Hollyoaks' Diane learns the truth about Edward's plans to drive a wedge between her and Tony

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Diane Hutchinson has discovered the horrifying truth about Edward in Hollyoaks.

The sinister doctor's veil started to slip in recent episodes when he desperately recruited Kurt Benson (Jeremy Edwards) to help him drive a final wedge between Tony and Diane.

In Thursday's (December 3) first-look episode, Tony (Nick Pickard) set the record straight to Diane (Alex Fletcher) that he didn't sleep with Maxine (Nikki Sanderson) — and was shocked Kurt started the rumour.

After realising that Diane was jealous because she still had feelings for him, Tony decided it was time to tell her how he truly felt.

"I'm in love with you, and deep down, I think you love me too," he declared. "Getting my job and my pride back has all been part of the plan. I'm finally me again."

Diane resisted because she felt Tony was "broken", but promised she'd at least "think about" his plea for a second chance.

At the Hutchinson house, Verity (Eva O'Hara) was fed up with her father "destroying his own son", so she set out to do something about it.

Just as Edward arrived at The Hutch for his romantic proposal dinner — with Tony forced to watch — Verity interrupted Diane to come clean about her dad's manipulations.

"He's a liar," she insisted. "He's a controlling psychopath who's obsessed with making you into my mother… I'm so sorry I didn't say anything before. He's been manipulating me, in the same way he's manipulated you and Tony.

"That's why I turned a blind eye to his crimes."

Diane was horrified to hear Edward committed "crimes", especially as Verity finally revealed that her father had faked Tony's brain tumour and operation so he could have Diane "all to himself".

The episode closed on Tony staring down his cunning father in The Hutch, while Diane reckoned with the shocking revelation at home.
