Hollyoaks Favourites airs Easter eggs for Carmel McQueen's iconic train crash

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks Favourites is offering fans the perfect opportunity to spot some Easter eggs about the soap's most iconic twists — including the infamous McQueen train crash.

This week's Favourites include a two-parter airing over Wednesday (April 22) and Thursday (April 23) reliving the infamous 'End of the Line' disaster that killed off beloved character Carmel McQueen (Gemma Merna).

Wednesday's instalment set up the crash, with the McQueens and others in the village boarding a party train from Porsche (Twinnie Lee Moore) and Lockie's (Nick Rhys) wedding bash.

Little did they know that Sonny Valentine (Aaron Fontaine) had snuck onboard the train intent on revenge against Theresa, just as Sienna (Anna Passey) and Maxine's (Nikki Sanderson) car was approaching the tracks.

What viewers back in 2014 might not have noticed is that episode included several moments that foreshadowed to so-called 'End of the Line' for Carmel.

For starters, Carmel mentioned at one point that she would "die" if her estranged McQueen family members wouldn't let her see Kathleen-Angel — the young daughter of Calvin Valentine (Ricky Whittle) and Theresa McQueen (Jorgie Porter) whom she was obsessed with.

In her anger, Theresa later correctly predicted that Carmel would have a one-way ticket on the train. Of course, Theresa had no idea that Carmel would actually die while trying to save her from Sonny.

One other moment also stands out. Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) once hits out at Carmel by suggesting she jump in front of the train — and although it's not a direct match for the storyline, the line was clearly included to foreshadow what was to come the following night.

The 'End of the Line' train crash was actually one of the Hollyoaks Favourites that Mercedes actress Jennifer Metcalfe hoped would be aired when the series was first launched last month.

"As for the storylines I've been involved in, I loved the train crash, that was brilliant," she said. "I'd loved all of our recent stuff as well, there's been so many over the years, but I'd love to see the train crash, that was pretty dramatic."

Hollyoaks airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm. Wednesdays through Fridays on E4 will feature classic episodes called Hollyoaks Favourites to compensate for the soap suspending filming.
