Hollyoaks newcomer Edward Hutchinson will immediately spark suspicion when he arrives in the village next week.

Joe McGann has been cast in the role of Edward, who's the estranged father of original character Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard).

The new character will be the show's latest supervillain and has been tipped for huge storylines in Hollyoaks' 25th anniversary year in 2020.

Edward's first scenes come while Tony is still trapped on Breda McQueen's pig farm, where he has spent the last few weeks at the serial killer's mercy.

As Marnie supports Diane with organising Harry Thompson's funeral, they are stunned when Edward turns up out of the blue, having heard the sad news about his grandson.

Despite his charming exterior, Finn immediately becomes suspicious of Edward when he refuses to listen to Diane's warning about staying away and turns up again the following morning.

Edward claims that he simply wants to help the family in Tony's absence and begs Diane to give him a chance.

With Finn still unsure over his true intentions, Edward isn't deterred by him and comes up with an idea to help Diane when she explains that she wants to feel herself again.

Putting his plan into action, Edward invites Nancy, Mandy, Darren and Cindy round to the flat to give Diane a bit of adult company, leaving her grateful.

As Edwards turns on the charm, everyone is impressed with his intellect and ability to speak numerous languages – apart from Luke, who also takes an instant dislike to the newcomer.

With Edward continuing to charm the village females, he relishes the role of being Diane's 'knight in shining armour' – while simultaneously undermining Finn in the process.

Later, Diane is worried when she sees Jack crying outside the hospital but Edward soon steps in and gives him some sound advice.

But with Edward starting to make quite the impression, is Diane making a mistake by trusting him?

Show boss Bryan Kirkwood previously told Digital Spy: "Edward is a very high-status, very strident leading man – and he's here to lay claim to his family in the absence of Tony.

"He's here to find out what's happened to Tony and he makes an instant connection with Diane, Dee Dee, Ant and Rose. Edward is a really exciting new character and Joe McGann is just fantastic."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
