John Paul McQueen has been manipulated by PC George Kiss in Hollyoaks' coercive control storyline.
The soap aired shocking scenes last week when PC Kiss physically abused John Paul during an argument, in addition to isolating him from his family and former boyfriend James.
In Monday's (January 11) first-look episode, George (Callum Kerr) horrified his partner when he tried to brush his abusive behaviour aside by insisting they'd both had too much alcohol.
"George that was more than a heavy night on the wine, okay?" John Paul insisted. "It got out of hand. You got out of hand."
The PC laughed off John Paul's concern but got visibly angry when his partner later accused him of bullying behaviour.
"You're really going to stand there and deny what you did last night?" John Paul demanded.
However, the PC turned things around on John Paul by insisting they were never "in control" as a couple, telling him: "This is what we do. We crank up the tunes. We blow off the steam, and things get messy."
George manipulated John Paul by continuing to deny that he'd punched him, instead insulting him for his failed relationships with James and Ste in the past.
"Let's face it, someone goes through that many bad break-ups, you have to wonder," George cruelly sniped.
When John Paul insisted he wouldn't let George off the hook, the PC declared: "I'm not on a hook! You got in my face, so I got in yours."
Before long, George had John Paul declaring his love and backing down when he accused his partner of trying to make him "the new bad guy" now that Silas is gone.
After George shed some tears and said John Paul was "not the man" he'd thought, the teacher began to doubt himself over whether he'd exaggerated the incident.
John Paul tried to confide in Nana and Goldie about his relationship problems, but when he stopped short of revealing George had hit him, Goldie warned him he wouldn't want to end up "sad and single".
Once the two men caught up with another, George's manipulations were taking hold as he actually got John Paul to swear that he'd never "hurt" him with another abuse accusation.
"I promise," John Paul told him.
Will John Paul realise he's being manipulated? The soap is soon set to revisit George's dark past when his former partner Dean arrives in the village.
