An episode of Hollyoaks Later has proved one of the late night spin-off show's most popular yet, pulling in 1.1 million viewers.

Having aired on Monday 6 January, the instalment – which centered on the downfall, and eventual death, of serial killer Breda McQueen (Moya Brady) – also scored E4 its biggest audience for a homegrown show in two and a half years.

During the first of the two-night special, Breda's children Goldie (Chelsee Healey) and Sylver (David Tag) confronted their mother after they convinced themselves that she was responsible for the recent killings.

Breda confessed, revealing that she'd even murdered Goldie's adopted father – a crime he'd served time in prison for.

Terrified at the thought of her children turning against her, Breda shot Sylver with a bolt gun and went on to set fire to the farm.

Fortunately though, Sylver's wife Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) showed up to help Goldie and her husband out of the burning property... but not before Sylver struck his mother in the head with a pair of knitting needles after she threatened Mercedes with a shard of glass.

According to a tweet shared by Channel 4, 15.3% of viewers were classed as 'young,' making it the most-watched episode by that demographic since the series' opener in 2008.

Heck, even for Hollyoaks Later, it was pretty dramatic. No wonder it did so well.

Hollyoaks airs Mondays through Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm.
