Mitchell Deveraux has come out as gay to his family in emotional Hollyoaks scenes.
The trainee doctor was essentially forced out of the closet earlier this week when his long-lost twin brother Toby Faroe (Bobby Gordon) slipped a photo of Mitchell (Imran Adams) and one-time partner Scott Drinkwell (Ross Adams) into Walter Deveraux's (Trevor A Toussaint) bible.
In Wednesday's (February 5) first-look episode, the Deverauxs were in chaos with Walter demanding answers, while Lisa Loveday (Rachel Adedeji) was entirely unclear on what was happening at all.
"It's a fake. It's not real," Mitchell insisted. "There was no kiss. That picture has been doctored."
Martine (Kéllé Bryan) and even Lisa could see that Mitchell was trying to talk his way out of Walter's wrath, so they encouraged him to calm down and speak his truth.
"I'm not saying the Bible is wrong," Martine explained to her dad. "But at every service I have been to, I have been taught to love one another unconditionally."
Walter then admitted that his anger came because his brother was gay and had died — and he demanded Mitchell repent at church. Mitchell stunned his mum and sister by agreeing to go to with his grandfather.
When Walter lashed out at Martine by calling her a "sorry excuse for a parent", Mitchell finally snapped: "You try to make everyone in this family the perfect version you want them to be. And if they aren't, you shame them for their entire lives… I choose to accept myself. I choose a fair shot at happiness.
"I choose to stop lying about who I am. I'm gay!"
Though Mitchell appealed for his granddad to "accept" him for who he truly is, tearful Walter stunned him by saying his grandson was no longer welcome in their house or family.
At the same time as all of the drama was unfolding at the Deveraux house, Scott was having to tell boyfriend Azim Desai (Nav Sidhu) that he wouldn't be moving with him to London.
"I'm not going, I can't move to London with you," Scott admitted. "I can't leave this place. I mean, I probably could, but I'd only end up thinking about all the loose ends that I haven't tied up yet, and I don't think that'd be fair of us."
Azim realised that Scott still had feelings for Mitchell, but left him one thought: "Promise me one thing. Please don't spend the rest of your life in this purgatory with Mitchell."
Scott went out for a walk to clear his head soon after his emotional goodbye with Azim. He ultimately ran into Mitchell, who was still reeling from his grandfather's rejection.
"Mitchell, you are a wonderful, beautiful person," Scott assured him.
With Mitchell worrying about what he would do with his life, he was overcome with emotion when Scott encouraged him to come with him — and they sealed the deal with a kiss.
Little did they know that Celeste and Toby were planning the next stage of their revenge on the Deverauxs at that very moment.
"We've done what we needed to do. We've broken them apart," she explained. "Now, while they're all obsessing over golden boy's scandal, we go after the weakest one. Find out what we need."
The couple settled on Lisa… and then curiously went off to sleep in separate bedrooms. What else are they hiding?
