Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Hollyoaks star Niamh Blackshaw has clarified why Juliet and Peri weren't socially distanced in their long-awaited reunion.
The young couple were finally back together in Thursday's E4 episode, when Juliet was released because of Victor Brothers being implicated in the County Lines drug operation.
In a recent chat with Digital Spy, Juliet actress Niamh explained that a clever bit of camera trickery was used for stand-ins doubling as herself and Ruby O'Donnell in separate shots.
"That was a really funny scene to film. Ruby's mum came in to play me," she explained. "My flatmate came in to play Peri. They were wearing wigs but the same costume.
"My flatmate, who was Ruby's body double, is so tall. Ruby and I are quite similar in height, but she is literally 5 foot 10! She had to sit down on a seat to get down to Ruby's level, whereas Ruby's mum – who was being my body double – is my height. I think it looks very believable from behind and from the side, so it worked out really well. It'll be interesting to see it when it's on screen."
The practical challenges aside, Niamh was thrilled to be back on set after weeks of Juliet appearing only in video calls from prison.
"I really missed talking to actual humans and not a camera," she said. "It was really nice to come back into the village and be on sets, rather than a green screen. I felt a bit more at home."
Now that Juliet is back with her "dream girl", the actress is hopeful that the couple can have some time to enjoy themselves.
"I would like Juliet to have a happy first relationship with Peri, but I don't think that it's going to be easy," she admitted. "I think it'll be a rocky road. They're very, very different characters. But, hopefully, their feelings will outweigh their differences and they'll be able to work through it and have some happy experiences."
Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
