Yahoo News Hollyoaks: Have Shane and Joel both been killed off?
Hollyoaks may have just killed off both Shane Sweeney and Joel Dexter in a literal shock cliffhanger tonight (August 22).
Joel found himself at dangerous Shane's mercy when the villain kidnapped his love interest Cleo McQueen as revenge for planning to turn him into the police.
Trapped in an engine room, a terrified Joel and Cleo were left believing that time was running out for them, fearing that Shane planned to kill them imminently.
The intense situation did prompt Joel to reconsider his priorities as he declared his love for Cleo and slept with her in a high-charged moment, but their reconciliation may have been short-lived as more horror soon followed.
When Shane returned, he was joined by Darren Osborne – who had followed him to the engine room in a desperate bid to help Cleo and Joel escape. But sadly, Darren's heroic act backfired when a frantic chase along the beach ensued, resulting in Joel and Shane flying over a cliff edge.
Joel launched himself at Shane in a desperate attempt to save Cleo from his clutches, only to send them both tumbling down a sand dune onto the rocks below – leaving Darren and Cleo fearing Joel was dead.
The closing moments of Tuesday's E4 episode saw Joel and Shane both seemingly lifeless on the ground – but will either of them survive? And if not, could this explain why Shane doesn't appear in the show's most recent opening titles?
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
