Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks aired a shock for Shaq Qureshi (Omar Malik) during Wednesday's (September 1) first-look episode on E4 as Sami Maalik (Rishi Nair) confessed he lied about them being brothers.

As fans will know, Shaq did some digging into his family tree and came to the conclusion that he and Sami must be siblings, as he believed his dad Kashif was Sami's dad too. However, it turns out that Kashif isn't actually Shaq's father after all, something Shaq has been in the dark about... until now.

In Wednesday's episode, Sami turned to Verity Hutchinson (Eva O'Hara) for help on how to tell Shaq the truth, admitting he 'flinches' every time he mentions their supposed biological bond, but Verity seemed reluctant to help him come clean.

Shaq and Sami then went for a walk, where Shaq once again called Sami "bro" as he opened up about his breakup. The two then agreed to go out on a lads night as Sami seemed desperate to change the subject, though he ended up bailing on heading into town at the last minute.

Shaq tried to get Sami to stay and laid on their brotherly bond thick. "You know how much you mean to me," he told him, even calling him the "best brother [he] could ask for".

"I would never do anything to hurt you," Shaq continued, noting that "blood is thick" and he loved his 'brother' so much he'd even offer him a liver, a kidney "or even an eye".

But that turned out to be the last straw for Sami. "Stop with the bro, please!" he hit back, before finally spilling the truth. "I lied about the DNA test. Kashif is not your dad, and I'm not your brother," he told a shocked Shaq.

As viewers already know, the Maalik family have another dark secret, as neither Shaq nor Sami know yet that Misbah is actually Shaq's mum. Shaq has always believed Misbah is his aunt.

As for when this mess will all be untangled and the full truth will come out, we'll have to wait and see. What we do know though is that Shaq's biological dad Ali Shahzad will be making an appearance soon, which could see the whole Maalik family truth bomb explode. Hollyoaks has cast former EastEnders actor Raji James in the role.

Sami actor Rishi Nair seemed pretty convinced everything will come out, and it sounds like it could cause a lot of tension. He told Metro: "I don't think [Sami will] take to it too kindly! He might feel slightly threatened as well, as he's the head of the Maalik family, and now this other guy has come in, who is more closely related. He's probably not the happiest, although that's more for selfish reasons!

"I think when he finds out, he'll be quite pissed off that he's not been told. Maybe [he could understand] Imran and Yazz [not being told] as they're kids, but the relationship with Sami and Misbah has always been quite open."

He continued: "But Misbah hasn't told him this, so this is another secret that he's had to find out the hard way," and noted that he thinks the reveal "will probably affect their relationship going forwards!"

Hollyoaks airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look screenings at 7pm on E4. Selected omnibus episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video.
