Hollyoaks star hints at Marie's fate after time jump

Hollyoaks spoilers follow from Monday's episode on Channel 4 streaming, which doesn't air on E4 until tonight (September 16) at 7pm.

Hollyoaks star Annie Wallace has given fans a hint about what to expect from Marie Fielding's story following the soap's one-year time jump, after she appeared to die in the motorbike crash.

During the soap's stunt week last week, Marie was seriously injured when Cleo McQueen crashed a motorbike into the McQueens' house. After her health took a turn for the worse at the hospital, she was rushed off screen for further treatment.

Her son Abe Fielding later menacingly told Cleo that Marie had died and that it was all Cleo's fault. But no other characters have mentioned Marie's death, and she did not appear in the soap's first time-jump episode - which means that her apparent death is not a done deal.

Wallace, who played Sally St Claire, has now dropped a further hint that we may not have seen the last of Marie, as she shared her thoughts on an Instagram Live following her departure from the soap.

After the actor read out a comment from a viewer which said "It's a shame that Rita Simons (Marie) got killed off", Wallace simply smiled and replied, "Watch and wait".

While Marie's fate is still up in the air, it was confirmed during Monday's episode that Sally left Hollyoaks village behind during the time jump and has joined some of the other McQueens in Alicante.

Wallace opened up about her feelings over her exit during her Instagram Live, admitting that she is "still a bit wrecked about it" after her character was cut from the soap following its move from five to three episodes a week.

She added that she would love to return to the role of Sally one day, saying she would "of course" go back if she was asked.

"The trouble is, it depends how long they leave it," she said, explaining that she may not be able to return if she was contracted to another project. "If I'm sat here twiddling my thumbs playing PS5, then possibly!"

Monday's episode featured a number of big twists following the soap's one-year time jump, with Leah Barnes and Leela Dexter both revealed to be pregnant, several engagements being confirmed, and Mercedes McQueen being diagnosed with cancer.

Fans also discovered the fates of Ste Hay and James Nightingale following the car bomb explosion they were caught in, with Ste shown waking up in hospital from a year-long coma.

Sadly, it was confirmed that James lost his life in the explosion, as Tony Hutchinson was shown laying flowers on his grave.

James star Gregory Finnegan has spoken to Digital Spy about his shock exit, saying that he felt "really sad" to be one of the cast members who was cut from the soap.

"I've gotten over it now. It was a shock to begin with. Then I was upset, angry and sad," he said. "But now I feel that I gave so much to the show – and James did as well. Now I feel proud of the journey I went on and the work that I did. It's going to be sad to leave James in the past, but I didn't have any choice!"

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
