Ste Hay isn't giving up hope of escaping the hate group in Hollyoaks just yet.

Viewers last saw Ste (Kieron Richardson) being brutally beaten by members Stuart Sumner (Chris Simmons) and Jonny Baxter (Ray Quinn) when he tried to leave with help from former member Jed.

In Friday's first-look episode (September 20), Ste felt hopeless when Stuart took his phone as punishment for his escape attempt — with a warning that he'd need to earn their trust before he'd get it back.

Stuart later tried to win Ste back around by surprising him with a moped as a gift, but their celebration at the Teahouse was interrupted by a disgusted Leela Lomax (Kirsty-Leigh Porter).

"You need to decide between these low-lives and your own kids," she told Ste.

Before Leela left, she was able to slip Ste a secret note begging him to meet her and the rest of his family at The Folly. Although Ste tried, he was unable to get away from Stuart and Jonny for the meeting.

However, Ste refused to give up, and when Stuart gave him money for moped insurance, he stashed the cash away instead. Ste also nicked his phone, so he could secretly tell Jed he was still planning to escape.

"I just have to play the long game to keep my family safe," he told Jed.

Earlier this week, Hollyoaks executive producer Bryan Kirkwood admitted he's been nervous about this phase of the storyline — as Ste realises the error of his ways.

"I'm nervous all the time about this story," he told Digital Spy. "But if I feel this nervous about this story, I think it's one worth telling. I haven't felt this nervous often.

"I've felt nervous for Kieron and for Ste. I think we've got the ability to turn it around. The power of Kieron's performance in these episodes shows how desperately stupid, vulnerable and blind Ste has been.

"There's a long way to go before we'll be putting him in your typical Ste love story. We don't expect the audience to forgive him easily, but we'll work hard to try and get there."
