The latest Hollyoaks first-look episode cliffhanger has teased a gunshot twist for Ethan and Maya.

The couple have been on the outs ever since Maya found out that Ethan had been helping the Osbornes try to escape her wrath over the botched robbery from last year.

In Friday's (January 7) first-look episode, Maya played the long game in getting even with Ethan by nicking his phone while pretending to cuddle with him.

Ethan was conning Maya too as he tried to warn Darren and Nancy they were still "in serious danger" from his girlfriend. All of their lies would be exposed by the time of the massive explosion later that night.

Maya eventually revealed to Ethan she'd set up "a deadly game" where one of his family members would be hurt within 10 minutes if he didn't get to them. He got to Dave first, but his brother explained Serena was out training.

Ethan was on high alert getting a video call from Maya, where she showed him she was stalking his niece Serena after her latest training regiment.

As Maya tracked Serena back into the village with a weapon in hand, Ethan swooped in to stop her without Serena realising what has been going on.

"This is ends now," he demanded.

When Ethan apologised and insisted Serena had nothing to do with their problems, sadistic Maya taunted that his niece's death would be "a valuable lesson to us all".

"You've lost your mind," Ethan realised. "Maya, I am begging you. Do whatever you want to me, but leave my family alone!"

Ethan told Maya he loved her, and when Maya revealed she loved him too, she reached for her gun. The two wrestled over the weapon until the gun went off in her pocket.

"Just know, this was always your fault," she told him as she fell to the ground. "You shot me."

Maya lost consciousness just as Ethan heard the explosion at the Salon De The nearby. But is Maya actually dead?
