Hollyoaks schemer Mac Nightingale has cruelly turned the tables on Marnie by wrongly blaming her for the death of their son Nathan.

The shocking moment took place at the end of Thursday's E4 first look episode (February 23), as Marnie continued to demand answers from Mac over the true cause of Nathan's demise.

Although Mac (David Easter) had previously insisted that he wasn't with Nathan when he had his fatal fall, Marnie realised that was a complete lie when she found Mac's bracelet among the clothes her son was wearing when he died.

Mac tried his very best to talk his way out of trouble, but he found himself backed into a corner when police also confirmed the bracelet was in Nathan's hand when they found him.

Unsurprisingly, Marnie (Lysette Anthony) certainly wasn't letting this major discrepancy go - so Mac was forced to fight fire with fire by coming up with a very clever lie to explain everything away.

He told Marnie: "You're right. I lied. I was with Nathan when he fell. We'd been arguing. Nathan was so angry."

So far, all true. But the worst was still to come...

With their son James watching on in horror, Mac added: "Nathan found out that you'd been lying about having a brain tumour. Marnie, he was going to disown you. He was going to tell the whole family. He was going to ban you from his wedding.

"I tried to stop him. I grabbed him, that's how he had hold of my bracelet. He was so angry, he wasn't looking where he was going. He tripped. I've been trying so hard not to tell you this because I knew you'd blame yourself."

Asked outright by Marnie whether she caused Nathan's death, Mac then cruelly replied: "Yes!"

Of course, all Hollyoaks fans know that Mac and Lisa Loveday are really to blame as Nathan uncovered their scandalous affair just before he died.

Mac and Lisa have so far managed to keep their guilt under wraps - and it seems that the pub landlord's latest lie has extended their good fortune for now. But is it only a matter of time before that luck runs out?

With Nathan's funeral airing on E4 tomorrow, it's bound to be a key episode to watch out for as the Nightingale family tension continues.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
