The Republican Party is fielding a renowned Holocaust denier as an election candidate in a suburban Chicago congressional district after he ran unopposed for the nomination.

Arthur Jones is a self-confessed former member of the American Nazi Party, with his own website containing a section called ‘The Holocaust Racket’ in which he argues that there is ‘no proof such a so-called ‘Holocaust’ ever took place anywhere in Europe against the Jews’.

He also previously claimed that Jews are ‘directly responsible for the murder of at least 300 million people.’

Despite standing uncontested, Jones is considered to be a major blight on the Illinois Republican Party, which has successfully blocked his previous bids for congress.

The state Republican Party has also disavowed his candidacy, with the state party chairman openly describing him as a Nazi.

But he has still managed to secure the nomination after the GOP opted against running any candidate in the heavily Democratic district, where Jones is widely expected to lost the vote.

He will run against either current Democrat Representative Daniel Lipinski who defeated Marie Newman, an advertising executive who challenged Lipinski for his seat.

In a statement released to the Chicago Sun Times last month, Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schenider said: ‘The Illinois Republican Party and our country have no place for Nazis like Arthur Jones. We strongly oppose his racist views and his candidacy for any public office, including the 3rd Congressional District.’
