On Holocaust Memorial Day, Survivor Describes Horrific Concentration Camp Experiences to European Parliament

Concentration camp survivor Margot Friedlander addressed the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27.

Friedlander told MEPs that she was the only member of her family to survive, as her teenage brother was taken from their apartment in Berlin by the Gestapo and sent “to the east.” Friedlander never saw her mother after that, as she immediately “turned herself in” to join her son.

In 1944, Friedlander was arrested and deported to a camp. In her speech, she described how she watched older people starve to death and die miserably “just a short while after their arrival” as they “got less to eat than the workers.”

The survivor told MEPs of the horrors of coming face to face with Auschwitz prisoners, saying they looked “barely human.” Credit: European Parliament Audiovisual via Storyful
