We know Devin Ratray best for playing a victim of crime, as Kevin's older brother Buzz McCallister in Home Alone, but now it's time for him to be on the other side of it all.

Because Ratray, who is still very much a serious actor, is starring in HBO's brand new crime drama Mosaic as Nate Henry, a state police detective investigating a murder.

And if you can't quite picture the man responsible for Buzz McCallister playing a straight role, rest assured that Ratray is more than up for the part.

Talking about his role in the drama, which is directed by Oscar-winning Steven Soderbergh, Devin told Vanity Fair that it was some of "the most serious, intense, dramatic work I've ever done" – and revealed that he bagged it without an audition.

Recalling the moment Soderbergh called him up to offer him the "very important" part, Devin recalled: "I said, 'Why are you just offering this to me?'

"He said, 'Well, what are you going to do, a bad job?' It was one of the most surreal moments in my life. I can't really say why he offered it to me. But I'm just eternally grateful that he did."

And Mosaic isn't your standard 'whodunnit?' drama – it's one of TV's first interactive series.

The six-episode run, which kicked off on HBO Go and Now yesterday (January 22) in the US, doesn't limit itself to the small screen – there's also a Mosaic app that essentially allows viewers to choose their own adventure, splitting the series' story into 14 parts called 'nodes'.

Presented on a wider story map, viewers are then able to pick exactly which order they watch the nodes in, based on which character they're most interested in following. Amazing, right?

Mosaic, also starring Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund and Jennifer Ferrin, is available on HBO Go and Now in the US.
