Home and Away star Lynne McGranger has reflected on one of her most challenging storylines.

The actress's popular character Irene Roberts took centre stage in a huge plot in 2019, as she lashed out at villainous Tommy and nearly killed him.

Irene was protecting Bella Nixon, as Tommy was trying to force himself on her after he'd groomed her online and arranged a meeting. The story also explored Irene's own history as a survivor of abuse, which explained her reaction to Tommy's crimes.

In a new chat with soaps podcast Soap From The Box, Lynne was asked whether she's able to switch off from Irene's more traumatic storylines.

Lynne replied: "I am able to cut off, because I think you would go stark raving mad if you carried it around with you. The only thing I find is that it's exhausting.

"I remember when I had to do the last really big storyline, which is when I walked in and found Bella being attacked by Tommy, who'd been grooming her online.

"I had to practically bludgeon this guy to death with a lamp, or a champagne bottle that just happened to be in my reach!

"Not only was it that storyline, but then it came out as to why I overreacted. The rest of the town couldn't understand why I nearly murdered this guy, and she had to tell the township why.

"We filmed Irene and Bella nearly murdering this guy, dragging the body to the hospital and parking him on a wall and running off. Then about eight weeks later, because of circumstances and holidays, then we filmed the bludgeoning.

"It was just crazy and I found that really gruelling and really exhausting. Then of course there was the court case.

"It just seemed to go on for months and months and months and I really did struggle with that. I found that really hard because it was such a long storyline."

Lynne added that working with Courtney Miller, who plays Bella, was a highlight of the tough experience.

She said: "Courtney is amazing and so much ahead of her years in terms of her ability. She just is a beautiful, innate, natural actress."

Lynne's full interview with Soap From The Box will go live on Sunday (April 4).
