Home and Away is about to explore Dean Thompson's internal struggles with his pain medication.

In scenes airing throughout this week in Australia (and later in the year on UK soil), Patrick O'Connor's character – recovering from the dramatic car accident – asks partner Ziggy Astoni to leave the farmhouse while he sorts himself out.

"Last time [he was injured], it was Willow looking after him as a friend, so he was okay with showing her how weak he was," the actor told TV WEEK.

"But Ziggy is a different story. He wants to be the man she needs – and currently, in the state he finds himself, he's not."

Dean's sister Mackenzie Booth soon turns up to find him on the floor in agony. He begs her to help him back onto the sofa but then shocks her by refusing to take his painkillers.

It's eventually revealed that the last time he took prescription drugs, Dean became addicted and now doesn't want to retread those unhealthy steps.

Further along, Dr Logan concludes that Dean is suffering PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) from a previous vehicle collision.

"At this stage, Mackenzie is like the messenger between Ziggy and Dean," O'Connor went on to add.

"He doesn't have the confidence to tell Ziggy where he is emotionally and physically, so he relies on Mackenzie to help him out."

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia). Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
