Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Home and Away star Shane Withington has spoken to Digital Spy about fan speculation that his character John Palmer could become romantically involved with Irene Roberts.

John has been dating Summer Bay newcomer Susie McAllister (Bridie Carter) for the past few weeks, but UK viewers will learn next week that she's been conning him all along.

But recently, John has also shared a lot of friendly scenes with Irene, leading some fans to wonder if they could become a couple in the future.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Shane said: "I think the love/hate relationship with John and Irene makes for a lot of fun to be had for getting those two characters together, not in a romantic sense, but maybe they'll flat together or go on a journey together and bicker and argue their way around!

"I think their relationship is bickering and arguing but they still have deep respect for each other. And it was wonderful that John leant on Irene when he needed someone, and it was nice to see that in her too. But I don't think they will ever be romantically linked."

Shane also spoke about whether he'd like to see John and Marilyn reunite or if he's looking to explore different dynamics with other characters now they're apart.

"It's the genre we are filming in," he said. "Characters in these series romance each other, get together, get married, have a fun time and then they divorce or one of them is killed.

"So I suppose I am enjoying the greener pastures away from the John/Marilyn relationship, which was hugely successful, but I hope that people enjoy the new direction John's taking."

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia). Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
