Former Home and Away and X Factor Australia star Johnny Ruffo has shared an update on how he's doing after he underwent an emergency operation last August to remove a cancerous tumour from his brain.

Speaking to hosts David Campbell and Sonia Kruger on radio show Today Extra, he revealed that his long-term girlfriend Tahnee Sims had to give doctors permission to operate since his family weren't there at the time.

"She had to sign the forms," he said. "There was a one in 20 chance that I wouldn't survive it.

"I almost didn't have time to react to it, because I went in and then I fell into a coma and I woke up two or three days later and they said, 'We operated and you had a tumour.'

"I had woken up and sort of had to learn to do most things again, like walking was a bit of a struggle. I couldn't walk in a straight line."

Talking about how he's doing nine months after the operation, Ruffo said: "I'm feeling good. In between chemo cycles, you feel better than what you do during the chemo itself.

"I'm on the up and up now, I've only got a couple months (of treatments) left."

That's not all – the actor and singer also revealed that he is back in the studio recording, stating: "It was such a long period between filming things and brain cancer has kept me out of working for at least six to eight months."
