Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.
Home and Away's Ari Parata and Mia Anderson will face a further hurdle in their battle to have a child together next week, as they try to overcome their adoption setback.
Following another devastating miscarriage for Mia (Anna Samson) earlier this year, she and partner Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) have applied to adopt a child. However, their application was recently turned down, with Ari blaming himself for having a criminal record.
The couple are determined to challenge the decision, particularly as Ari has turned his life around, but their efforts are about to be challenged yet again by more bad news.
When the soap returns to UK screens next week following its festive break, Ari's brother Tane Parata (Ethan Browne) will be in a critical condition after being subjected to a chemical attack. After he's taken to hospital, Mackenzie Booth (Emily Weir) takes it upon herself to contact his family and update them on Tane's condition.
While Mia and Ari are lamenting their difficult day with the adoption solicitors, they receive the call from Mackenzie and immediately rush to the hospital to be with Tane.
The situation at the hospital is critical as Tane continues to flatline, but Logan Bennett (Harley Bonner) refuses to give up on him, despite Jasmine Delaney (Sam Frost)'s recommendation that he stop compressions. Just as Logan is about to give up, Tane's heart rate presents at last.
Tane is rushed to ICU and it is soon discovered that he has a sedative in his system, as well as the dangerous gas that was released into Salt. Mia and Ari are desperate to see him but, due to the high levels of exposure to toxic chemicals that Tane has had, they are forced to watch him through the ICU door.
When Cash Newman (Nicholas Cartwright) arrives to collect the reports on Tane, he is accosted by Ari, who demands to know who has targeted his brother like this.
Mia suddenly receives a call from the adoption lawyer and she asks Ari his opinion on what to do but he snaps at her, unable to think about anything other than Tane and his near-death condition.
Later on, Ari apologises to Mia for getting angry and encourages her to contact the adoption lawyer.
However, Justin Morgan (James Stewart) soon finds Ari taking out his anger on a vending machine and he offers to take a walk with him to cool off. Ari opens up to Justin about his and Mia's adoption hopes, admitting that his criminal past still seems to be catching up with him.
When Nikau Parata (Kawakawa Fox-Reo) finds out what has happened to Tane, he is furious and begins to form his own opinion about who is responsible for hurting him, pointing the finger at Felicity Newman (Jacqui Purvis).
Ari suddenly realises that there could be a way to get around the adoption problem – by taking his name off the application entirely.
Mia flatly refuses to even consider the possibility, but will she change her mind as their struggle continues?
Home and Away airs these scenes on Tuesday, January 4 and Wednesday, January 5 at 1.15pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
