Home and Away's Kyle Shilling has discussed the importance of Mali and Rose's story on the soap.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Shilling, who joined the show late last year as Mali Hudson, said that the upcoming story between his character and resident Summer Bay police officer Rose Delaney is "a really important thing to show on screen".

In upcoming scenes, sparks fly between Mali and Rose when they meet on the beach and the pair end up going on a date.

Later, when Mali spots Rose in her police uniform he confronts her saying that he wants nothing more to do with her due to the way the police treat Indigenous people.

Talking about his reaction to finding out that Rose is a police officer, Shilling said: "He's not happy about it. Mali reveals that back home, they don't get along with the police.

"Mali's been through so much that he doesn't know how to trust her – it's a tough one for him to navigate. And it's an example of what it can be like here in Australia with the Indigenous community – there's a lot of police brutality so it's a really important thing to show on screen."

Discussing a conversation between Mali and Rose at a party where Rose hopes to clear the air, Shilling said that Rose "doesn't want someone to think wrongly of her as a person because of her job. So she tries to put forward her point that not all police officers are the same.

When asked if he thinks a romantic relationship would work between Mali and Rose, Shilling said: "I do. Mali figures out that Rose is blunt, yet she has this cheekiness to her that he likes. There's a good balance between them because Mali's cheeky too, but he's also fun and he can be annoying – everything I am!"

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.45pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. First-look screenings air at 6.30pm on 5STAR and the show also streams on My5.
