Home and Away's real-life couple Sophie Dillman and Patrick O'Connor have discussed falling in love while starring on the soap together.

The actors, who play Ziggy Astoni and Dean Thompson respectively, told TV Week that they couldn't be happier with their relationship, with Sophie explaining that being friends first helped make them stronger as a couple.

"We were work buddies first, and it's helped us work well together now, so we're lucky in that regard," she said.

"It's nice to have a relationship built on friendship. At the core we are best mates first and we treat each other like that, but it's also made our relationship stronger starting out that way."

Meanwhile, Patrick said that they feel "comfortable with each other" on set.

"It's pretty chilled," he said. "If we go out as a couple, we get spotted by fans but [fame] hasn't changed us too much.

"The UK fans are hectic and they love to chat about everything and us, too! But I think Sophie's an amazing actress and it's a good feeling on set to know you're comfortable with each other."

By contrast, Sophie and Patrick's on-screen characters have endured a difficult time together in recent months, with Ziggy and Dean splitting after the truth came out over Dean's involvement regarding Ross Nixon's murder.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and returns on Monday, February 1 at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia).
