Value retailer Home Bargains is getting into the Christmas hamper business - depending on where you draw the line. On the face of it, £4.99 for a deluxe festive present really is a bargain for the home.

Only one thing - what actually constitutes a Christmas hamper? For less than a fiver, you can buy an ‘assorted christmas hamper’ ie a flat cardboard box with 14 chocolate bars wedged into a plastic holder.

There's no basket, in fact no anything aside from small chocolate bars. Now, if this were called “assorted christmas chocolate selection” - but it isn't.

In practice, it’s clearly not a hamper. A tin of Quality Street is more of a hamper.

What it is, though, is fairly cheap. At £4.99, that means each chocolate bar is setting you back 35p.

However, then there is the other catch they are mini bars. On the Home Bargains website, they say that “with this variety of mini bars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy".

If you're going to get a hamper, Marks & Spencer have a range of them from a mere £20 all the way up to three figures. You can go to Fortnum and Mason if you really have a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket.

If you want relatively inexpensive chocolate, then Home Bargains might be for you.
